(Hipschen) Sherman, age 78, of Alabama, and formerly of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 4:30 p.m., on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at North Mobile Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by her loving family. To honor Mary’s life, funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, June 7, 2019, at St. Patrick’s Church, 1425 Iowa Street, with Rev. Greg E. Bahl officiating. To celebrate Mary’s life, family and friends may visit from 4:00 p.m., until 7:00 p.m., on Thursday, June 6, 2019, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where there will be a parish scripture service held at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Mary was born on May 30, 1940, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Edwin N. and Mary Helen (Schmal) Hipschen.

Mary attended grade school at St. Mary’s Grade School, then went to the Academy of the Visitation before graduating from Dubuque Senior High School, and going on to attend Clarke College for 2 years. She was united in marriage to the love of her life, Wayne Sherman, on April 18, 1963, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dubuque, and they were blessed to have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary this year. Mary was a wiz with numbers and she put those talents to use with Dubuque Bank and Trust for 23 years as a financial counselor with the Key West Branch until her retirement in 2001. Mary’s faith was a very important part of her daily life, she was a long time member of St. Patrick’s Church, where she sang in the choir and served as the treasurer for the St. Vincent De Paul Society. She also enjoyed volunteering her time and talents with the Girl Scouts, the Boy Scouts, and she worked with the Dubuque Police Explorer Scout program for 14 years. When she found some free time in her days she enjoyed sitting at her sewing machine creating her next beautiful outfit, curling up with a good book, or whipping up something delicious in the kitchen, as she was an excellent chef and baker. We are deeply saddened today at the loss of our dear, sweet Mary, but find some comfort in the fact that she is now resting peacefully, free of the health issues that she has faced the past few months.
