Sam was born on March 31, 1936, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Adelbert E. and Florence M. (Koehler) Schute.
Sam graduated from Loras Academy in 1954. He served in the Co. A Iowa National Guard from 1954-1965. Sam followed in his father’s footsteps graduating from Barber school in 1957. He worked with his father at Schute’s Barber Shop on University Ave. in Dubuque. Sam married the love of his life, Shirley A. Rank on November 26, 1959, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. They shared 54 years of wonderful memories together. Sam worked for John Deere, retiring in 1989 after 30 years of service. He was a member of United Auto Workers Local 94 and the John Deere retirees. Sam and Shirley owned and operated the Rhomberg Dairy Queen from 1982 – 2000. After officially retiring you would find Sam puttering around the house, landscaping, making or repairing something. He loved helping the children with home improvement projects and always kept busy. Sam was Assistant Scout Master at Holy Trinity Troop 16 and a member of the Order of the Arrow. Sam taught his children self-reliance and pride in a job well done, they owe their success to him. He was a dedicated Chicago Cubs and Bear fan. Sam enjoyed golfing, fishing, gambling on the riverboat, playing cards, games and puzzles with his family.
